TEACHING STATEMENT

I teach so others may teach

I aim to assist students in becoming the artists they aspire to be within the expansive and fulfilling field of dance. Immersing oneself in the rigorous practice of studio work and theoretical discussions places a student at the heart of the creative process, and consistent effort ultimately leads to their development as dance artists.

As a dance educator, I work across various genres, including traditional West African dance forms and modern/contemporary practices, alongside theoretical and discursive elements. Through these diverse experiences, I am deeply interested in exploring why we dance and how we express and communicate through movement.

Dance technique serves as a gateway to understanding the body’s truths and, ultimately, to one’s humanity. It is the craft that dance artists use to enhance the impact of their actions and, consequently, the art they create to achieve their intended outcomes. The body acts as a medium through which expression and the articulation of form can instigate change, and it is through dedicated training that individuals can attain a comprehension that is both accessible and applicable.

By integrating the readiness of the mind, body, and soul, students gain the confidence needed to progress from being student dancers to professional artists. Incorporating foundational alignment, structural, and sensory work provides students with opportunities to develop their physical expressivity, supporting their longevity in the field. The classroom serves as a liberated space for experiential possibilities, allowing students to thoughtfully develop their craft. The vitality of the “stage” continues this cycle, culminating in the students’ eventual passing on of their knowledge and the teaching of others.
